That being said, there were parts of Cry Wolf I really enjoyed, and other parts I didn't really enjoy much at all.Each new book I begin, for me, is a new adventure. I have new characters to meet and get to know, a new setting to get immersed in, a new plot and new conflicts to figure out how to solve. It seems like Patricia Briggs knows this, because she is a very strong and solid writer. Her settings were lush. Her conflicts were difficult and fascinating to watch unfold. These are the parts of the book that I really enjoyed. There are places, however, where she needs work. Her characters for example. They had a ton of problems to solve, but then why did I feel like they weren't very deep or developed? I didn't feel like Anna had much of a personality at all. And I felt the same way about Charles. These are the two main characters in the series, and that is a huge problem! If I only care about what happens to them a little bit, then your work as a writer is not done. It was very frustrating to me as a reader, because I really wanted to lose myself in the book, but I couldn't because I really didn't care about the characters all that much.And then there were the issues with pacing. It was a bit slow. It wasn't a major problem and didn't make the book unreadable or anything like that, but I felt there were places where the plot could have been tightened up a bit. Places where nothing happened. Places where you were waiting for something good to happen, because you felt like it should, but nothing did. Despite my complaints though, I can see why Patricia Briggs has a lot of fans, and why she is one of the most popular UF writers. She's a very solid writer and her world-building is unique and fun. I just didn't care for this book as much as I thought I should. But I have heard her Mercy Thompson series is wonderful. So maybe I will move onto that next.
